Pulp and Paper

The modern day paper mill contains numerous units requiring refractory linings. The largest refractory consumers being the lime sludge kilns and recovery boilers.

The lime sludge kiln is a rotary kiln in which lime mud, a byproduct of the paper making process, is fed. The goal of this unit is to refine the mud into calcium oxide.

The lime sludge kiln consists of numerous sections from top to bottom including the chain section, lifter section, intermediate zone, and burning zone.  Process considerations in the lime sludge kiln include temperatures up to 2500°F, chemical attack, and abrasion.

RSS Dixie can provide numerous materials such as Dixie Floor Gun M for the chain section, Dixie Crete MC 50 C for the lifters, and Dixie Crete LC 6001 for the intermediated and burn zones

The recovery boiler is another area in the paper mill requiring extensive refractory usage. The burning of black liquor, which is created during the paper making process, creates an aggressive smelt that is extremely detrimental to refractory.

Smelt spouts in recovery boilers often requiring tabular alumina products to withstand the aggressive smelts. In addition, a product that can be hand packed around these spouts is an added bonus for the refractory installer. RSS Dixie can provide numerous products such as our Dixie Tab Kast 97 and Dixie Tab Kast 94.

For less aggressive areas in the recovery boiler such as the penthouse and sidewalls, we offer numerous products such as Dixie Floor Gun M, Dixie Gun 28 T, and a variety of Thermogen plastics.
